A two-day capacity building workshop for migrant tele-callers was held with the objective of enhancing communication, customer service, and workplace readiness skills. The program brought together 15 participants, providing them with practical training on tele-calling techniques, digital tools, stress management, and professional ethics on September 26-27, 2025 at Bethany Convent, Alto Santa Cruz.
On day one, In Charge Migrant Ministry, SPCSA, Father Francis Bosco started the discussion with explanations on the kinds of migration (interstate and intra state) and sectors in which informal labourers work. Professor Kinshuk Sarkar, explained how labour markets work, how surplus labours increase the desperation among workers as a result of it they end up taking jobs in low wages. He also explained how the labour ministry works, the role of labour commissioner and labour courts. How to collect the evidence to appear in Court. He answered several doubts on standardization of domestic work - wages, working hours, role of employers and welfare board. In the afternoon Fr Bosco and Bhakti facilitated discussion on documentation, its importance and formats. How to write applications in wage theft cases. When a worker comes to the migrant’s desk, how we can take his case, follow up and collect the necessary evidence etc.
Day two, Professor Peter spoke on child rights. How to protect child rights, what is the role of CWC. How we can activate these channels to ensure children's rights. He gave many practical examples of enrolling children in school, how to rescue them and how the JJ Act works. He also shared about cybercrime cases among children. Advocate Caroline discussed about how to approach courts, the importance of writ petitions. She introduced the concept of Letter Petition even if we don't know what provisions are there in law, we can still write to the Judge to look into matters that are concerned with human rights. If legal aid is not available then, how to demand it.
Towards the end, Father Bosco summarised the two days sessions, he mentioned on what we need to focus on in future desk-wise at the provinces level. He mentioned we have a budget of 8 lakhs that can be utilised to organize meetings of workers collectives, CSOs etc.
The workshop created a positive learning environment and enabled peer-to-peer exchange of experiences. Overall, the workshop successfully achieved its goals and contributed to strengthening the skills and motivation of migrant tele-callers. It was recommended that such initiatives be continued periodically to ensure sustained skill enhancement and long-term professional growth.
