Walking with the Young: Educators Revisit Don Bosco’s Preventive System

QUICK BITE -

As the Salesian Congregation prepares to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Don Bosco's Preventive System, a joint seminar for the educators of Don Bosco High School and Junior College, Oros, Maharashtra and Don Bosco Tuem, Goa was organized on June 5, 2026 at Don Bosco Tuem. The seminar brought together 64 educators committed to the Salesian mission of education.

The seminar was conducted in three interactive sessions, each incorporating group discussions, collaborative work, and presentations.

In the first session, the participants were guided to reflect on and identify the challenges faced by the students under their care. The resource person Vice Provincial, Panjim, Father Banzelao Teixeira highlighted some of the contemporary issues affecting young people and invited the participants to discuss additional challenges observed in their own educational contexts. The educators were divided into groups, and each group prepared a chart and presented its findings to the assembly.

The second session focused on the qualities and attitudes that educators should cultivate in their ministry among the young. Drawing upon incidents from the life of Saint John Bosco and his work with the boys of his time, the resource person presented the essential characteristics of a Salesian educator. The session included group discussions and presentations, enabling participants to reflect on their own educational practices.

Post lunch, the third session engaged the participants in the analysis of case studies. Each group was assigned a practical situation and was invited to respond to it in the light of Don Bosco’s Preventive System. The discussions and presentations generated meaningful insights and provided the educators with an opportunity to apply Don Bosco’s educative method to real-life situations encountered in schools today.

The seminar concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Principal, Don Bosco High School and Junior College, Oros, Father Melwin Ferrao. He expressed gratitude to the resource person, Vice Provincial, Father Banzelao Teixeira and to Principal, Don Bosco Tuem, Father Jonathan Rebeiro, for hosting the programme.

Deeply inspired by the Preventive System—the Educative System of Don Bosco—the participants departed with renewed enthusiasm and zeal, ready to begin the new academic year with a stronger commitment to serving and accompanying the young entrusted to their care.
