The Department of Computer Applications, Don Bosco College (DBC), Panaji, together with the Department of BBA Travel & Tourism in collaboration with the Goa Police, Panaji Police Station, hosted an enlightening and informative session on, Cyber Security for the first-year students. The session was conducted by Ms Sangeeta Naik, a distinguished Cyber Yodha and an expert at the Goa Police Cyber Crime Unit, who shared invaluable insights into the evolving landscape of digital threats and safety measures. Other dignitaries included Police Sub Inspector, Manjunath Naik, Senior Constables, Dhananjay Parab, Amol Hattekar, Constable Subhash Mandrekar, and Lady Constable, Gauri Varak.
The event, held at the Bicentenary Hall, Assistant Professor, Glenda Mascarenhas of the Department of BBA Travel & Tourism, highlighted the significance of cyber security in today’s digital age. The increasing reliance on technology and the internet has led to a surge in cybercrimes, making it imperative for students, especially young internet users, to be equipped with the knowledge and tools to protect themselves online.
Sangeeta Naik, of the Goa Police Cyber Crime Cell, presented the various types of cyber threats that individuals face in their daily lives. She began by addressing the most common forms of cybercrimes such as phishing, hacking, identity theft, cyberbullying, and online scams. Her presentation was filled with real-world examples, many of which directly involved students' digital habits, such as oversharing personal information on social media platforms, which can lead to identity theft and financial fraud. One of the key takeaways from Naik’s talk was the importance of digital hygiene. She emphasized simple but effective measures, such as creating strong passwords, avoiding the use of public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions, and updating software regularly. She also encouraged students to be cautious of unsolicited messages, links, and email attachments—common tactics used by cybercriminals to steal personal information.
The talk also delved into the rising threat of cyberbullying and digital arrest, a topic that particularly resonated with the students. She shared alarming statistics on how cyberbullying has led to severe mental health issues among young people, and she urged the students to report any form of online harassment. She also highlighted the role of the Goa Police in offering support and legal recourse to victims of cybercrimes.
In an interactive session, students were invited to ask questions and share their personal experiences with online threats. Many students raised concerns about the safety of their personal data while using mobile apps, social media, and online banking services. Naik reminded students of the importance of cyber laws and their role in curbing the increasing number of cybercrimes. She also provided some useful information regarding complaining, checking if one’s email account, phone number etc.
The session concluded with, College Principal handing over token of appreciation to the Guest speaker and other dignitaries. The talk was a resounding success and a step forward in educating the students about the significance of safeguarding their online presence. It not only empowered them with knowledge but also instilled a sense of responsibility in their digital interactions, helping them become more cautious and informed digital citizens.
