The Vocation Commission of the Salesian Province of Panjim- Konkan hosted a fun-filled Hill Thrill Camp at Don Bosco Academy (DBA), Sutgatti–Hubli from October 2 to 4, 2025 exclusively for boys from standard 6 to 10 across North Karnataka. A total of 52 enthusiastic boys participated, primarily from Sirsi, with others joining in from Tumrikopa, Londa, Dharwad, and Hubli.
The camp began with a warm welcome by the Rector, Father Lionel Braganza of Don Bosco Academy Sutgatti, followed by an introduction by Father Infancio Pires, a core organizer along with Brother James Marcus. Ice-breakers helped the boys bond quickly before they tucked into a sumptuous lunch. The group was divided into teams for interactive activities that fostered friendship and team spirit, followed by an evening of lively games.
In the evening session, Rector, Principal of Don Bosco Sirsi, Father Sandesh Fernandes, addressed the boys on the importance of having a goal in life and the art of time management – emphasizing the camp's vocational theme. This was followed by Principal, DBA Sutgatti, Father Merwin Fernandes, who introduced the boys to the Salesian system of education and shared impressive statistics about Salesian institutions worldwide. He later led the group in an animated Rosary. The day concluded with a traditional Good Night Talk by Brother Marcus, a hearty dinner, and much-anticipated night games, after which the boys rested well by 11:45 PM.
Day two began with the sound of the traditional brass bell and enthusiastic clapping to wake the campers. After a morning jog and exercises, the boys participated in the Holy Eucharist celebrated by Father Braganza. Post-breakfast, they tidied up their dorms – including sweeping, mopping, and even cleaning washrooms, an amusing and novel experience for many. Father Siggy delivered an engaging talk on the missionary spirit of the Salesians, complemented by a short introductory video presented by Father Pires. After a break, the boys enthusiastically took part in a keychain-making activity, displaying patience and creativity as they crafted their own personalized mementos.
Later, Brother Marcus gave a talk on life choices and careers, offering personal counselling and career guidance to interested boys. This was followed by an informative session by Father James D’Souza, a qualified social worker, who introduced the boys to YaR (Young at Risk) programs and Salesian social work.
In the afternoon, the group prepared for the campfire and then embarked on the much-awaited hike, one of the highlights of the camp. The adventurous trek, filled with fun tasks and picturesque stops, lasted over an hour and a half. Mr. Santosh, a lay collaborator and member of the vocation team, joined the hike and shared his enthusiasm with the young participants.
After a refreshing bath, time in adoration and stories about Don Bosco shared by Vice Provincial, INP, Father Banzelao Teixeira, the boys enjoyed a delicious Biryani before gathering for the grand Campfire Night – a joyful event packed with songs, skits, yells, and laughter, wrapping up only at midnight.
The final day began with a twist – aerobics instead of the usual exercises after the jog. After freshening up and participating in the Mass presided over by Father Teixeira, the boys shared their last breakfast together. They then cleaned the premises thoroughly and packed up.
Smiles were all around during the prize distribution ceremony, where every participant received a token of appreciation. While the groups from Londa and Tumrikopa departed as scheduled, the Sirsi, Hubli, and Dharwad boys stayed back until lunch, not wanting the experience to end.
The camp also featured the valuable presence of lay collaborators, Santosh, Patrick (PE Teacher), and Sairaj, a former boarder, whose cheerful involvement enriched the camp atmosphere.
With hearts full of joy, heads buzzing with new dreams, and a deeper understanding of the Salesian mission, the boys returned home, cherishing unforgettable memories and renewed motivation for life.
